GaWC's (Globalization and World Cities) lists the world's first-tier and second-tier cities: Guangzhou is ranked Alpha, thus a first-tier city.
Guangzhou is the core of the Pearl River delta in Southern China and the capital of Guangdong province. As a traditional commodity distribution center, it offers various types of professional wholesale markets. Since 1957, the Canton Fair held twice a year, and other professional exhibitions all year round are among the essential platforms for Chinese and foreign commodity exchanges.
The South is an important area for light industry in China. The manufacturing industry has grown large over time, but the high-tech industries also develop at a fast pace. Many local products exhibit strong overseas sales. Guangdong province is one of China's largest exporting centers towards foreign countries, exports accounting for about 16% of total Chinese exports in value terms.
Next to Hong Kong and Macao, Guangzhou has an extensive transportation network, connecting the core areas of the Pearl river delta and the Yangtze river delta through airports, highways, high-speed railways and waterways. The network is so integrated, that any two points within the transportation hub can be connected within 4 hours. The development of harbors and international airports have greatly improved logistics, warehousing and tourism.
